When you consider how complicated it can be to buy a house it makes you wonder how anyone manages to sell; no wonder property buying companies are on the up! So, you want to buy a house, and you are wondering what is the best way to do it. Well, welcome to the club. People have been struggling to find just the right place to live since the Egyptians developed surveying. Back then, it was easy: whatever the Pharaoh said, he got! These days, for most of us, it is a little tougher to buy a house.
Now, the first question is: where do you start? You want to buy a house; ask yourself the basic question of where do you want to live? Sometimes, that question is answered for you; you get transferred, or you get a job offer, or you get married and have to relocate. Once you settle on a location, do some research: where are the jobs, or where is your job and where are the places to buy a house in that community?
After that, you will want to check out each area. If you have school-aged children, picking an area with good schools will be an important factor. Conversely, if you are retired, maybe you wan to buy a house far from the schools but close to recreational areas. A lot of times, you can find out a great deal about an area from the Internet. Check out the schools, the crime rate, the housing sales etc. and settle on an area you all like and can afford before you try to buy a house. In some cases, you can take virtual tours of homes for sale and get a feel for what kind of house to buy.
Okay, so you have settled on an area and a neighborhood that you like. What is next on your to-do list before you buy a house? Well, check with a bank to see just how much of a house you can afford. A lot of people make the mistake of looking at some homes, falling in love with one and then saying: “I want to buy that house!” Then they go to the bank and find out what the payment is going to be and face the reality of not being able to afford it. So, go to a lender, lay out your income level, down payment amount and credit history. From that, they will tell you how much you can borrow and at what interest rate. From that you will be able to figure out how big (expensive) a house to buy.
Then you can start looking at homes. And, don’t let the initial condition of a place put you off. So, okay, some house has the most god-awful carpeting running through it, with stains every where! But, if you peel up a corner of the carpet, you see beautiful hardwood floors underneath. So, maybe that house is not so bad after all. Don’t get bogged down in the little, easy DIY problems. A couple of weekends of some “sweat equity” can change a messy storage room into a children’s playroom, or that sewing room you have always dreamed of! Often times, getting an estate agent is a good way to get steered toward reputable homes when you want to buy a house.
The challenge to buy a house is perhaps the greatest one any of us ever face. After all, a home is usually the biggest investment we make in our lives. So, if you want to buy a house, do your homework and check every place out thoroughly. A little careful checking beforehand will save you a lifetime of headaches when you buy a house.
