As many as one in seven Britons are eating into funds set aside for mortgage repayments to fuel their shopping habits, new research has suggested today (June 9th).
A survey by online bank cahoot has revealed that despite rising bills and food prices caused by the global credit crunch, one in four struggle to kick their shopping habit.
Clothes are the most popular draw, with the average Briton now putting aside ten per cent of their income to buy them, but 90 per cent also subsequently blow that budget.
However, it is the figure of 13 per cent who admitted to using money designated for household bills and repayments for shopping that is particularly worrying.
Matthew Timms, director at cahoot, said: "Despite the credit crunch, it seems the UK fashionistas are finding it hard to cure their 'habit'.
"However, while a little of what you fancy does you good, with so much economic uncertainty around it's more important than ever to budget carefully.
"Keeping on top of your finances and setting aside a specific amount each month for treats is a prudent policy."
