The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has confirmed that there has been another sharp rise in the amount of properties remaining unsold during May.
The organisation released new research which shows that estate agents now have an average of 97 properties waiting to be sold in their portfolios, compared to 84 in April and 76 in March.
In addition, the average number of properties being sold per agent per day has now fallen to just seven, down from 13 in May 2007.
NAEA president Chris Brown said: "To maintain more stability or better yet, to restore more confidence, the NAEA continue to urge the government to help the market.
"We have called for measures such as a stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers and temporary tax relief on the mortgage interest of people's primary residence.
"We really want to see action from the government to ease pressure and give consumers hope for the future."
The latest figures appear to indicate that confidence in the market is continuing to plummet as the global liquidity crisis takes hold of the UK economy.
