A new report from homeless charity Shelter has suggested that over six million families feel depressed with current increases in housing costs.
According to the research - which was based on a YouGov survey - around one million households (4.1 per cent) are now devoting over two-thirds of their income to housing.
In addition, 4.1 million households (16 per cent) have been forced to use a credit card over the past 12 months to ensure that housing costs have been covered.
The charity's chief executive Adam Sampson said: "Our new report and campaign show just how difficult it is for ordinary people to cope with spiralling housing costs, and how desperately unaffordable housing has become.
"People are going to extraordinary lengths to ensure they pay their rent or mortgage, but the effects of stress or depression, having to sell possessions or deprive the kids of treats can be devastating to family life."
The research also showed that around 400,000 families are falling behind with rent or mortgage repayments, while millions of people are stuck on council house waiting lists.
