The government has today (June 17th) been warned that its failure to meet new-build housing targets could send the UK into recession.
A new report from the Construction Products Association (CPA) suggests that housing starts have reached their lowest ebb since 1945, with just 147,000 new properties built so far this year.
Now the House Builders' Federation (HBF) has responded to the situation by claiming that urgent action is required as the market at large continues to suffer in the current economic climate.
Executive chairman Stewart Baseley said: "We have been warning for months of the dangers of allowing this downturn to continue.
"Today's report is further evidence of the urgent need to get some confidence and fluidity back into the housing market.
"If the government wants to deliver the homes the country needs, and to avoid the housing market dragging the wider economy into recession, it must act now."
The alarming figures have surfaced despite the fact that lucrative infrastructure contracts such as the Building Schools for the Future programme and projects for the 2012 Olympics in London look set to push up demand.
The government has set itself a target of constructing two million new homes by 2016, with a million carbon-neutral properties added by 2020.
