So many mortgage borrowers are facing financial difficulties that the Treasury has launched a multimillion-pound package to help.
A total of £10 million will be made available to make free access to debt advice more readily available.
In addition, Citizens Advice staff will be given extra training so that they are better prepared to deal with peoples' problems.
It is a clear sign that many people are facing huge financial difficulties and may lead to a surge in people seeking a fast property sale.
"It is clear from speaking to consumer groups and the mortgage industry that borrowers may be concerned about the impact of the current market conditions on their mortgages," said chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling.
"That is why it is vital that the government, working with industry, offers as much support as possible both directly to those people and to the consumer advice groups who can help them in their day-to-day lives," he continued.
